Netherwood

Netherwood
Thanks to the hard work and generosity of the residents of Stoke Lacy circa 1999, we have our own perfect oasis of calm in Netherwood. Following a house-to-house collection throughout the village together with a very generous donation from the then MD of The Morgan Motor Company, Peter Morgan, £18,000 was raised to purchase a field down Hopton Lane. The wood was designed and planted by local people. It was finally acquired by the Woodland Trust in 1999, as an empty farmer’s field, through the “Woods on your Doorstep”, the Woodland Trust’s Millennium project to create 200 new community woods across England and Wales. The "Woods on your Doorstep" scheme is backed by the Millennium Commission with an award of up to £6.5 million and supported by the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts and the Forestry Commission.
In the centre of the wood lies the Millennium Rock inscribed as follows:
“We planted the trees
underneath the wheeling wings
with the breeze in our faces
and in our minds
the thought of the shading leaves
over the generations to come. “
MM
Planted underneath the rock is a time capsule for archaeologists of the future.
